Public Toilet in Prizren

Location: Prizren, Kosovo
Project Type: Public Infrastructure
Program: Public Sanitary Facility
Status: Completed
Year: 2024
Client: Municipality of Prizren
Total Project Value: Approx. €115,000
USAID Contribution: Approx. $18,000

Situated in the historic center of Prizren, this project rethinks the role of everyday infrastructure, transforming a basic necessity into a considered architectural response. Conceived as a minimal and context-driven intervention, the public restroom addresses a long-standing urban need while carefully negotiating its relationship with the surrounding environment.

Developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Prizren and supported by international partners, the project balances functionality, accessibility, and contemporary architectural expression, positioning itself as both a service facility and a subtle urban landmark.

The design operates through restraint. A clear and legible form, combined with a reduced material palette, allows the structure to integrate seamlessly into its context, while maintaining a distinct identity within the urban landscape.

A defining gesture is the blue ramp, which ensures universal accessibility (PAK access) while establishing a visual dialogue with the nearby Lumbardhi River. This element becomes both functional and symbolic, linking movement, inclusivity, and place.

The program includes separate facilities for men and women, an accessible unit, and a centrally positioned child care space, introducing a layer of social awareness and inclusivity rarely addressed in such typologies.

Rather than treating infrastructure as purely utilitarian, the project proposes a more thoughtful approach—one that elevates the everyday through clarity, dignity, and sensitivity to context.
